- Abmeldung
- Deregistering your address when you move out of Germany or to another city. Read the full guide
- Anmeldebestätigung
- The stamped paper you receive after completing Anmeldung. Keep copies everywhere. Read the full guide

- Mandatory address registration at the Bürgeramt within 14 days of moving in. Read the full guide
- Arbeitsagentur
- Federal Employment Agency. Handles unemployment benefits, job placement, and Kindergeld.
- Arbeitszimmer
- Dedicated home office room. Can be tax-deductible if used exclusively for work. Read the full guide
- Aufenthaltstitel
- Residence permit. The general term for any permit allowing you to live in Germany. Read the full guide
- Ausländerbehörde
- Foreigners registration office. Handles residence permits, Blue Cards, visa extensions. Read the full guide

- BAföG
- Federal student financial aid. Available to EU students and some non-EU residents. Read the full guide
- Beitragsbemessungsgrenze (BBG)
- Income ceiling for social insurance contributions. Earnings above this are not subject to social security deductions. Read the full guide
- Blaue Karte EU(EU Blue Card)
- Work residence permit for university graduates with a job offer above the salary threshold (€50,700 in 2026). Read the full guide
- Bürgeramt
- Citizens office. Where you do Anmeldung, get ID documents, and handle local bureaucracy. Read the full guide
- Bürgergeld
- Basic income support (replaced Hartz IV in 2023). For unemployed residents with legal residency.

- Chancenkarte(Opportunity Card)
- Points-based job seeker visa allowing 12 months in Germany to find work. Needs 6 points minimum. Read the full guide

- Deutschlandticket
- €63/month (2026) for unlimited regional public transport across all of Germany. Read the full guide
- Doppelte Haushaltsführung
- Double household deduction. If you maintain a home in India and rent in Germany, significant tax deductions apply. Read the full guide

- Einbürgerung
- Naturalization / German citizenship. Requires 5 years residency (reduced from 8 in 2024), B1 German, and the LiD test. Read the full guide
- Einkommensteuererklärung
- Annual income tax return. Not always required for employees, but almost always worth filing for a refund. Read the full guide
- ELSTER
- The official German online tax filing platform. Free, in German, used to submit your Einkommensteuererklärung. Read the full guide
- Elterngeld
- Parental allowance. 65% of net income (€300-1,800/month) for up to 14 months after a child is born. Read the full guide
- Entfernungspauschale
- Commuter tax deduction. €0.30/km for first 20km, €0.38/km from km 21, one way, per working day. Read the full guide

- Fachkräfte-Aufenthalt(Skilled Worker Visa)
- Work residence permit for qualified workers with a job offer. No salary threshold, but slower PR path than Blue Card. Read the full guide
- Fahrschule
- Driving school. Required for converting an Indian driving license to a German one. Read the full guide
- Familienzusammenführung(Family Reunion)
- Process for bringing spouse and children to Germany. Rules depend on your visa type. Read the full guide
- Fiktionsbescheinigung
- Temporary document proving your residency status while your permit application is being processed.
- Finanzamt
- Local tax office. Processes your tax return and issues your Steuerbescheid (tax assessment). Read the full guide

- GKV(Gesetzliche Krankenversicherung)
- Public/statutory health insurance. Mandatory for employees earning below €77,400/year. TK, AOK, Barmer, DAK. Read the full guide
- Grundfreibetrag
- Tax-free allowance. First €12,348 of annual income (2026) is not taxed. Read the full guide

- Hausarzt
- General practitioner (GP). Your primary doctor for referrals, prescriptions, and sick notes. Read the full guide
- Homeoffice-Pauschale
- Home office flat-rate tax deduction. €6/day, max €1,260/year. No receipts needed. Read the full guide

- Impressum
- Legal notice required on every German website. Must include real name, address, and contact info.
- Integrationskurs
- Government-subsidized German language and culture course. 600 hours language + 100 hours civic orientation.
K
- Kindergeld
- Child benefit. €259/month per child (2026). Paid to all residents with children, regardless of income. Read the full guide
- Kinderzuschlag
- Additional child supplement for low-income families. Up to €297/month per child on top of Kindergeld. Read the full guide
- Kirchensteuer
- Church tax. 8-9% of your income tax, automatically deducted if you declare a Christian religion at Anmeldung. Read the full guide
- Kleinunternehmerregelung
- Small business VAT exemption. No VAT charged or filed if revenue is under €25,000 previous year / €100,000 current year. Read the full guide
- Krankenversicherung
- Health insurance. Mandatory in Germany. Public (GKV) or private (PKV). Read the full guide

- Lohnsteuerbescheinigung
- Annual tax summary from your employer. Arrives in January/February. Needed for your tax return. Read the full guide
M
- Mietvertrag
- Rental contract. Needed for Anmeldung, bank accounts, and almost every bureaucratic step. Read the full guide
- Minijob
- Mini job earning up to €603/month (2026). Low tax, limited social insurance contributions. Read the full guide

- Nachsendeauftrag
- Mail forwarding service from Deutsche Post. Redirects old mail to your new address for 6-12 months. Read the full guide
- Nebenkosten
- Additional rental costs (heating, water, garbage, building services). The gap between Kaltmiete and Warmmiete. Read the full guide
- Niederlassungserlaubnis
- Permanent residence permit. Blue Card holders can apply after 21-27 months. Skilled Workers after 33-48 months. Read the full guide

- Pfand
- Bottle deposit. €0.08-0.25 per bottle, refunded when you return empties to any supermarket. Read the full guide
- PKV(Private Krankenversicherung)
- Private health insurance. Optional for high earners (above €77,400/year) and self-employed. Cheaper when young, expensive later. Read the full guide

- Rentenversicherung
- Pension insurance. ~18.6% of gross salary (split 50/50 with employer). Mandatory for all employees.
- Rundfunkbeitrag
- Broadcasting fee. €18.36/month per household. Mandatory even without a TV. Register within 2 months of Anmeldung. Read the full guide

- SCHUFA
- German credit scoring agency. Landlords and banks request your SCHUFA report. New arrivals have no SCHUFA history. Read the full guide
- Sozialversicherungsnummer
- Social security number. Issued by Deutsche Rentenversicherung. Your employer needs it; arrives by post. Read the full guide
- Sperrkonto
- Blocked account required for student and Opportunity Card visas. Releases ~€1,027/month for living expenses. Read the full guide
- Steuerberater
- Tax advisor. Regulated profession in Germany. Fees capped by StBVV. Worth hiring if you have foreign income or equity. Read the full guide
- Steueridentifikationsnummer(Tax ID)
- Your 11-digit lifetime tax ID. Arrives by post 2-4 weeks after Anmeldung. Employer needs it for your first payslip. Read the full guide
- Steuernummer
- Local tax office file number (different from Steuer-ID). Format: XX/XXX/XXXXX. Needed for tax returns and invoicing. Read the full guide

- Ummeldung
- Re-registration when moving within Germany. Same process as Anmeldung but at your new Bürgeramt. Read the full guide
V
- Versicherungspflichtgrenze (JAEG)
- Annual income threshold for mandatory public health insurance. €77,400 in 2026. Above this, you can switch to private. Read the full guide

- Werbungskosten
- Work-related tax deductions. Commute, home office, equipment, training. Flat €1,230 deducted automatically; claim more with receipts. Read the full guide
- Wohnungsgeberbestätigung
- Landlord confirmation of move-in. Non-negotiable requirement for Anmeldung. Your landlord must sign it. Read the full guide
Z
- ZAB Zeugnisbewertung
- Statement of Comparability for foreign degrees. Issued by ZAB. Costs ~€200, takes ~3 months. Needed if your degree is not H+ on Anabin. Read the full guide
- Zusatzbeitrag
- Additional health insurance contribution on top of the 14.6% base rate. Varies by insurer, average ~2.5% in 2026. Read the full guide
