Is my Indian driving licence valid in Germany?

This is one of the most searched questions that lands on this site, so here is the short version. Yes, for 6 months from the date of your Anmeldung, provided you carry an International Driving Permit from India together with your Indian licence. After those 6 months you must have a German licence or stop driving. India is on Germany's Anlage 11 list with conditions, which means the licence is not simply swapped: you take the theory test (available in English) and the practical test. Budget roughly €700 to €950 all in and 6 to 10 weeks. Driving on after the 6 months is a criminal offence, not a parking ticket.
