How do I register my address in Germany (Anmeldung), and what is the deadline?
Anmeldung is the first thing almost every other process depends on: tax ID, bank account, health insurance card, residence permit. The rule is within 14 days of moving in. You go to the Bürgeramt (names vary by city) with your passport and the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung, the landlord's confirmation that you live there. Without that landlord form you will be turned away. In the big cities, book the appointment the day you know your move-in date; slots are the bottleneck, not the paperwork. The city-by-city guide with booking tips: /guides/anmeldung and /guides/anmeldung-by-city If your situation is different, reply below with the details and I will try to help, or someone who has been through it will.

How do I renew my Indian passport from Germany?
Start at passportindia.gov.in, choose "Re-issue of Passport", fill the form, pay, and book an appointment at the Indian mission responsible for your German state. There are four: the Embassy in Berlin, and the Consulates in Hamburg, Frankfurt and Munich. Baden-Württemberg goes to Munich; Stuttgart only has an honorary consulate that does not handle passports. Bring your current passport, Anmeldebestätigung, two photos and the printed acknowledgement. The new passport comes by registered post in 3 to 5 weeks. There is no Tatkal at missions abroad, so apply 6 to 9 months before expiry, and earlier if your residence permit renewal depends on it. How many Indians live in Germany?
311,130 Indian nationals on 31 December 2025, according to the Federal Statistical Office. That is 2.5 times the 2018 figure. Indians are the largest group of international students (58,833 in winter 2024/25), receive more EU Blue Cards than any other nationality (13,423 in 2025), and have the highest median full-time wage of any nationality here. Two caveats. The count is by citizenship, so Indians who became German are not in it. And Destatis does not publish the number by city, so any "Indians in Munich" or "Indians in Berlin" figure you read is an estimate, including ones on this site that I am slowly replacing with sourced numbers. All figures with sources and dates: /guides/indians-in-germany-statistics If your situation is different, reply below with the details and I will try to help, or someone who has been through it will.

Can I switch from a student visa to the Opportunity Card without leaving Germany?
In principle yes. §20a(4) of the Residence Act allows the Opportunity Card to be issued inside Germany to someone who already holds a residence permit under sections 3 or 4 of the Act, and a study permit is in section 3. You still need the proof of funds, and either a qualification fully recognised in Germany (then no points) or the points route with its language requirement. But check whether it is the right move. If you have just graduated from a German university, the post-study job-search permit (§20) exists for exactly your situation and does not carry the Opportunity Card's 20-hours-a-week work limit. The Opportunity Card makes more sense for people who studied outside Germany. Compare the two: /guides/post-study-visa and /guides/opportunity-card If your situation is different, reply below with the details and I will try to help, or someone who has been through it will.

How many points do I need for the Opportunity Card, and is there a calculator?
Six, unless you do not need points at all: if your degree or vocational qualification is fully recognised or comparable in Germany, you count as a skilled worker and get the card without the points test, only with proof of funds. Everyone else needs a qualification recognised in India, A1 German or B2 English, and 6 points from: partial recognition by a German body (4), German B2/B1/A2 (3/2/1), English C1 (1), 5 or 2 years of related experience (3 or 2), age 35 or younger (2) or 36 to 40 (1), a shortage profession (1), 6 months' earlier stay in Germany (1), a spouse applying with you (1). The calculator on this site follows the statute line by line and tells you which route you are on: /tools/opportunity-card-calculator If your situation is different, reply below with the details and I will try to help, or someone who has been through it will.

Does my spouse need A1 German to join me in Germany?
Not if you hold a Blue Card, and not if you hold a Skilled Worker permit on either route, the vocational one (§18a) or the academic one (§18b). §30 of the Residence Act exempts all of them. This is the point most people have wrong: the exemption is not limited to degree holders. A1 before the visa is still required for spouses of most permanent residents and of German citizens, with exceptions, including one for permanent residents who held an exempt permit immediately before. How much money do I need in the blocked account for a German student visa?
€992 a month, so €11,904 for a 12-month blocked account (Sperrkonto). That is the amount released to you each month once you are here. Do not confuse it with the Opportunity Card figure, which is €1,091 a month (about €13,092 a year). Both are revised roughly yearly, so confirm the current number with your provider before transferring. Which provider, how long it takes and what else the visa file needs: /guides/student-visa-from-india-vfs and /guides/fintiba-vs-expatrio If your situation is different, reply below with the details and I will try to help, or someone who has been through it will.

What happens to my student health insurance when I turn 30?
Your 30th birthday is the only trigger. The old 14-semester cap was abolished in 2020, so a long Master's does not end the student rate; turning 30 does. From the next day your membership continues automatically as voluntary public insurance at roughly €250 to €280 a month. You do not have to apply for anything. The two-week letter your insurer sends is the window to leave, and leaving requires proof of other insurance, so for most students it is simply a price change. What is the Blue Card salary threshold in 2026?
€50,700 gross a year is the general threshold. For shortage occupations, which include IT, engineering, medicine and mathematics, it is €45,934. Most software engineers and IT professionals from India clear the shortage threshold. The salary is one of three things that matter; the other two are a degree that is recognised or comparable in Germany (check anabin) and a job offer that matches it. What the salary nets you after tax and insurance: /tools/salary-calculator. The application from India step by step: /guides/blue-card-application-from-india If your situation is different, reply below with the details and I will try to help, or someone who has been through it will.

Which B1 German exam should I take for permanent residence?
All four are accepted at the Ausländerbehörde and for citizenship: Goethe-Zertifikat B1 (about €200), telc Deutsch B1 (about €180, the most widely available), the DTZ (€25, the cheapest, taken at the end of an Integrationskurs) and ÖSD B1 (about €160). Pick on cost and dates, not prestige: they carry the same weight. The certificate does not expire for immigration purposes, so take it when you are ready. Preparation time by starting level and what each section looks like: /guides/german-b1-exam-indians If your situation is different, reply below with the details and I will try to help, or someone who has been through it will.

Can I work while on the Opportunity Card?
Yes, part-time: up to 20 hours a week on average, in any job, not only in your field. On top of that you can do trial work of up to two weeks at a time with an employer, which must be qualified work, lead to training, or be part of a recognition measure. Full-time work needs the switch to a Blue Card or Skilled Worker permit once you have the offer. Many people use the 20 hours to cover the blocked-account gap while they interview. Details: /guides/opportunity-card If your situation is different, reply below with the details and I will try to help, or someone who has been through it will.

How much is Kindergeld, and do Blue Card holders get it?
€259 a month per child in 2026, with no income ceiling, paid until 18 (or 25 while the child is in education). You apply at the Familienkasse after the child's birth or arrival; back-pay is limited to 6 months, so do it early. Blue Card, Skilled Worker, Family Reunion and settlement permit holders who are employed or self-employed qualify from day one. Students on a study permit and Opportunity Card holders still job-seeking do not. Elterngeld, Elternzeit and Kita costs by state: /guides/parenting-benefits If your situation is different, reply below with the details and I will try to help, or someone who has been through it will.

Is my Indian health insurance enough to enrol at a German university?
No. Enrolment needs a Mitgliedsbescheinigung from a German insurer; Indian travel or health policies do not count. Public student insurance costs between about €145 and €152 a month in 2026 depending on the insurer, and only the insurer's Zusatzbeitrag differs. TK issues the certificate as an instant PDF, which is why most Indian students end up there; AOK and BARMER take a day or three. Note that public student cover starts on the first day of the semester, so you need incoming travel insurance for the weeks before. Insurer comparison with this year's rates: /guides/student-health-insurance If your situation is different, reply below with the details and I will try to help, or someone who has been through it will.

Is my Indian driving licence valid in Germany?
This is one of the most searched questions that lands on this site, so here is the short version. Yes, for 6 months from the date of your Anmeldung, provided you carry an International Driving Permit from India together with your Indian licence. After those 6 months you must have a German licence or stop driving. India is on Germany's Anlage 11 list with conditions, which means the licence is not simply swapped: you take the theory test (available in English) and the practical test. Budget roughly €700 to €950 all in and 6 to 10 weeks. Driving on after the 6 months is a criminal offence, not a parking ticket. Full steps, costs and the state-by-state notes: /guides/driving-license-exchange If your situation is different, reply below with the details and I will try to help, or someone who has been through it will.

What happens if I do not find a job within the Opportunity Card year?
The job-search card cannot simply be renewed as a job-search card. Before it ends you need another permit, a Blue Card or Skilled Worker permit if you have a qualifying offer, or you leave. There is one extension: if you hold a contract or binding offer for qualified work but do not meet the conditions of those other permits, the card can be extended as a follow-up card (Folge-Chancenkarte) for up to two years, with the Federal Employment Agency's approval. A new job-search card is only possible after a gap at least as long as your previous stay on one. The whole route, including what you can and cannot do on the card: /guides/opportunity-card If your situation is different, reply below with the details and I will try to help, or someone who has been through it will.
